BONDS BETWEEN ST. KITTS AND NEVIS AND THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA (TAIWAN) STRONGER THAN EVER, SAYS PRIME MINISTER HARRIS

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, July 15, 2019 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, engaged the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Her Excellency Dr. Tsai Ing-wen, in a round of discussions that focused on the further strengthening of the already strong bilateral relationship that exists between both nations.

The meeting took place on Sunday (July 14) evening at the Park Hyatt St. Kitts, where an Agreement on Cooperation in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) was also signed between by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Honourable Shawn Richards on behalf of in St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. the Honourable Jaushieh Wu.

Prime Minister Harris, while delivering brief remarks, stated, “Nearly four decades after the first meeting and cementing of our bond, I am confident that our two countries’ relationship is in the right place at the right time and is striving in the most propitious of circumstances.”

Taiwan was the first county to establish diplomatic relations with the twin-island Federation after it gained Independence in 1983. Since then, the ROC has made tremendous contributions in several areas including national security, information and communication technology, public infrastructure, education, sport, agriculture, health and many more.

Dr. Harris further indicated that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Federation St. Kitts and Nevis share a “bond that is stronger than ever, and President Tsai’s visit is the ultimate reflection of this.”

The prime minister also spoke highly of the leadership of President Tsai, noting that, “Her firm and competent leadership has been an example to, and Taiwan has grown in strength and stature internationally as a result of the quality of diplomacy being pursued by her and her government.”

H.E. Dr. Tsai is the first female president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the third president of Taiwan to visit St. Kitts and Nevis.
