FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI— [US] Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) officers on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 arrested murder suspect Samuel “Ghost” Roberts, while following up on a burglary-related case in the Paradise Mills Housing Community in St Croix, US Virgin Islands, VIPD Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced late Tuesday.

Mr Roberts, who police had sought since February, managed to evade law enforcement for months.

But while conducting the followup on the burglary incident, residents of the Paradise Mills told police that they believed the suspect of the burglary had been staying in an abandoned house adjacent to the housing community, Mr Dratte said.

Police then went to the location and found a black male lying on a couch. Officers immediately called for backup to block the house’s exits. The suspect attempted to escape, however, realising that he was surrounded, locked himself inside a room. The suspect, later identified as Mr Roberts, had a brief standoff with officers, but soon after surrendered without incident, according to Mr Dratte.

Mr Roberts, 20, was wanted for the January 31, 2017, murder of McDonald Samuel in Lorraine Village, according to Mr Dratte. Another man was also injured during the same incident. Mr Roberts was charged with first-degree murder, and was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending his advisement hearing.
