Trinidad police are probing the murder of Kevon “Monkey” Walcott, the cousin of Olympic Gold medallist Keshorn Walcott, who was gunned down at his home on Saturday night.
Police believe that the 41st murder so far for the year may be in retaliation for the recent murder of a fisherman in the rural northeast coast village of Cumana.
Walcott, 33, a father of two, was shot several times by a lone gunman who ran into his yard after he drove up at his Cumana home, parked his vehicle and was walking towards the door.
His common-law wife and children reportedly ran for cover when they heard the gunshots. Police said they have since fled the home fearing for their safety.
Police are working on the theory that Walcott’s murder may be linked to that of 38-year-old David Callender, another fisherman from the district.
Callender was shot dead by a man after an argument over a missing boat light last Sunday.
The 30-year-old suspect in that case has since been arrested.
