St. Kitts and Nevis sensation Small Axe Band will be doing big things at the first international show for this year’s Carnival – Flag Fest 2k15 at St. Maarten Festival Village this Saturday, April 18, from 8:00pm.

Small Axe Band is known for its energetic and pulsating sweet musical style of jamming. The band was formed in St. Kitts in 1980 under the name of Vibrational Roots Combo with Small Axe in parentheses. It has eight members.

Small Axe Band has been representing St. Kitts and Nevis internationally and regionally, having toured many destinations to perform, including the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and around the Caribbean region.

The band has also performed at the Canadian National Exhibition, the biggest annual fair held in Toronto. In St. Kitts and Nevis, Small Axe Band has been “cutting down bigger trees” musically, almost every year by consistently winning the Road March competition held during St. Kitts’ annual National Carnival in December.

It is known as “the country band” because all of the band members hail from the Old Road/Verchilds areas of St. Kitts.

During its initial years, the band had to weather the storms of being considered a small time band, trying to make it in the world of more popular bands in the twin island nation.

They have since broken this trend and have performed with many popular regional Soca bands and artistes, such as, Machel Montano, Rupee, Destra, Byron Lee, Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass, The Mighty Baron, WCK, Krosfyah, Burning Flames, Jam Band, Imagination Brass, Seventeen Plus and many others. Small Axe has also provided musical accompaniment for The Mighty Sparrow at a concert in St. Kitts some years ago.

Small Axe Band has also been producing its own albums, at least one a year, since its beginnings and has the reputation of being a local band that attracts a crowd during live performances.

Small Axe Band has won the Road March in St. Kitts and Nevis National Carnival nine times and is the current road march champion. Small Axe Band has recently completed a tour to the US, Canada and the UK. The band is presently at home in St. Kitts, where it is satisfying its music-thirsty fans. Small Axe Band consists of eight members.
