Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 31, 2015 (SKNIS): The State Service for the anniversary celebrations of Independence in St. Kitts and Nevis will be held in the sister-island of Nevis for the first time.
The Charlestown Methodist Church will host the event scheduled for September 13 with a starting time of 4:30 p.m. Archdeacon Valentine Hodge of the St. Kitts Christian Council indicated that the Nevis Christian Council and the Nevis Evangelical Association are busy organizing the speakers, choice of hymns and other aspects of the order of service.
“I think it is a very important development and does pop the question why did it take so long,” Archdeacon Hodge said, commenting on the service being held in Nevis. “We are [one] federation and it would have been a good thing from the start of Independence [celebrations] if we could have had it every other year on the other different island so I think it is a very good move.”
The clergyman reflected on the theme for this year’s anniversary and said the service encapsulates the important message: “United in Building a Stronger Nation.”
Arrangements have been made for persons to travel to Nevis. Three local ferries have been contracted and will run a special round trip schedule within the time period. Although the church is close to the pier, organizers are mulling transportation from the ferry terminal to the venue, however this is yet to be finalized.
“This is a fellowship event,” Archdeacon Hodge stressed. “I believe Kittitians should feel happy and glad to be able to go across and share in the service with Nevisians. I believe that Nevisians are looking forward to this encounter and it augurs well for the two islands.”
St. Kitts and Nevis gained independence from Britain on September 19, 1983.
This is indeed Unity working for all in the Federation
