In 1956 Gertrude Paul moved from St Kitts and Nevis to Leeds in the United Kingdom.

Years later she became the city’s first black headteacher and an important community leader in Chapeltown who founded the West Indian Carnival.

In the most recent celebration of International Women’s Day, Paul was listed as one of eight Leeds heroines whose achievements were recognized for the positive impact on the world.

Here is a tribute to Paul brought to us by Leeds Civic Trust

The St. Kitts and Nevis Association of Leeds was started by Ms Paul.
