Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 27, 2018 (SKNIS): The Department of Labour will bring together stakeholders from across all sectors in St. Kitts and Nevis to help draft an Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) policy.

The one-day meeting takes place at the Conference Room of the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) on Thursday, May 03. Approximately 70 participants, representing government, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, trade unions, and the St. Christopher and Nevis Social Security Board are expected.

The National Consultation on the Way Forward for a National Policy on Occupational Safety and Health supports government’s agenda in ensuring decent work for and creating a culture of prevention as it relates to OSH.

“To this end, we continue to provide training for all of our [labour] inspectors,” Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Ron Dublin-Collins, said in an address to mark activities that will be held in St. Kitts to officially mark the World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

The local activities will run from Sunday, April 29 to Friday, May 04. Other events scheduled include service at the Wesley Methodist Church on Sunday, April 29, an appearance on the radio and television programme ‘Working for You’ on Wednesday, May 02, and OSH presentations at worksites and educational institutions throughout the week.

The address officially marking the opening of local activities for the World Day for Safety and Health at Work will air on Saturday night at 7:45 p.m. The international observance is on Saturday, April 28.
