Sports Minister Confirms Appointment of Kim and Paula Collins as Coaches; One Step Closer to Athletics Academy

February 17, 2022

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN) – Hon Jonel Powell, Minister of Sports Youth and Culture, confirmed that former World Champion and Olympian Kim Collins had been appointed National Sports Coach in the Ministry of Sports.

“Kim, as we all know, has his own wealth of experience from World Champion to Olympian and has been known to coach and train a number of younger athletes,” said Minister Powell.

His wife, Paula Collins, has also been appointed an Athletics Coach within the Ministry and explained that she has a wealth of knowledge to help bolster athletics training in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“Paula in her own right has lots of experience and is a certified coach and has been able to assist not just in athletics but other [aspects of coaching] in terms of non-traditional areas, for example, nutrition and other forms of training.”

The two have been attached to the coaching department in the Ministry of Sports since November 2021.

The Minister shared that with the addition of the two coaches, the aim of an athletics academy within the Ministry of Sports is closer to fruition.

“We see this as an initial step towards the ultimate establishment of an Athletics Academy and Center of Excellence, so to speak, here in St. Kitts and Nevis; this is something that had been flirted with for quite some time, and I thought that it was time that we really stop flirting and make it a reality. And so we’re happy to have both of them on board. They’re working well with the team. And we look forward to lots of success stories coming out of this, especially now as we are basically preparing for the resumption of sports and, in this case, athletics.”
