The Hon. Eugene Hamilton sponsored Clive Tyson Memorial League – a new local basketball league organized by the Cayon Basketball Club has tipped off to an exciting start and is progressing smoothly according to organisers. The league is named after a former player from Cayon who tragically passed away while exercising on the beach. The tournament features eight teams and will be played three times a week until mid-November.

“One of the Association’s objectives has always been to foster and host leagues outside of our regular season,” said SKNABA President Glen Jeffers to FIBA.basketball. “However, it was put on hold in recent years due to the lack of committed volunteers to run these leagues, and (the lack) of sponsors. Throughout the National League, these have been some of the challenges.”

Hon. Eugene Hamilton has stepped forward in a massive way as the main sponsor of the league. The league is scene as the beginning of the resurgence of Basketball in the Cayon area.

President Jeffers acknowledged the efforts made by citizens, like Hon. Eugene Hamilton, to make these initiatives come true, stimulating the development and the popularity of basketball throughout St.Kitts-Nevis

“The league is organized by the Cayon Basketball Club mainly through the efforts of Club Vice president Tyrone O’Loughlin. He’s trying to bring a Cayon team back to the SKNABA National League. This is a way to identify talent in the community. Cayon is one of our strongest communities in basketball and football. But everything was centered around football and no one took up the mantle and worked with basketball players that later moved on to other teams,” said SKNABA President Jeffers.

Early in 2020 the Hon. Lindsay Grant Challengers Basketball League is expected to make it’s return after a few years absence. The main organiser of that tournament Jayme Harrigan has indicated that teams from around the island have already shown some interest and the league will return with a bang especially with the recent upgrades to the facility
