CONSULTATIVE GOVERNANCE IS VITAL, SAYS DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER RICHARDS

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 19, 2016 (SKNIS):  On Wednesday’s (February 17) episode of “Working for You”, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Honourable Shawn Richards, noted that consultative governance is important as it allows for ministers of government to positively cater to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

 

Deputy Prime Minister Richards stated that all ministries within Government have to work together for the betterment of all.

 

“Whether it is within or outside of Cabinet, it takes consultation with your fellow minsters to get things done,” he said, while noting that it is imperative for everyone to work together as almost everything that is done involves working with another ministry.

 

“For example, to run the affairs of any ministry you need the support of the Ministry of Finance and so you need that consultative approach, whether it is you have to consult with the ministry or with persons within the ministry,”

 

He noted that Members of Cabinet discuss a number of issues within the confines of the grouping, relevant to the development of the Federation and nationals.

 

“At the end of the day, what we do is we look at what is most economical, what is in the best interest of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Honourable Richards, while adding that it is not about political parties. “It is about the development of St. Kitts and Nevis, the development of our people and so you can consult with each other, you have different ideas contending.”

 

The Honourable Minister stated that his cabinet ministers listen to each other and at the end of the day they arrive at an agreement as to what is the best approach to take.
