Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 16, 2019 (SKNIS): The upcoming Best Village Grandparent competition will pay tribute to older persons 65 years and older who have made an invaluable contribution to their community, says Novelette Morton, Senior Tourism Projects Officer in the Ministry of Tourism speaking on the radio and television “Working for You” on May 15.

The Best Village Grandparent is a ministerial award and is part of the upcoming Best Village Competition.

Ms. Morton outlined some of the criteria to be eligible for the award.

“We are looking at things like persons who offer advice to community members particularly the youth, who were and still are disciplinarians, who are respected and admired by the community, who have helped over the years to preserve culture and customs and I’m sure we can think of persons in various communities who have made an indelible contribution towards cultural and community development,” she said.

The senior tourism projects officer added that eligible older persons must also help to provide the basic needs of youth in their area.

“The Best Village Grandparent will pay tribute to someone who …basically nurtured a number of the young people in their community,” she said.

Ms. Morton noted that the Department of Social Services and Community Development usually organizes a month of older persons in October.

“We [too] want to ensure that our older persons who help to keep the communities together are honoured,” she said.

Some other categories in the National Best Village Competition include Best Clean and Green Area, Best Kept Neighborhood, Best Home Garden –Vegetable and Ornamental, Best Village Shop, Best Sponsored Round-About and Best Sustainability Programme.-30-
