Antiguan Police have detained one Elton “Chalice” Charles whom they suspect of brutally killing popular football personality Urcil “Iron Sheik” Martin late Monday afternoon in Parham, Antigua .
Acting Police Commissioner, Wendell Robinson, confirmed the death of Martin, 47, of Parham. The commissioner, who was on the scene of the crime Monday night, was unable to provide any information about the circumstances that led to Martin’s death.
However, “Chalice” was identified and a manhunt was launched immediately by the police. About two hours later, Charles, 39, turned himself in at the Parham Police Station.
Martin was a very popular and much loved football personality and resident of the Parham community.
Hundreds of Parham residents, who gathered near the scene, described Martin as a community-spirited man, who was easy to talk to and always had the interest of the youth at heart.
Martin was coach of the second division team, ABAYA, of Parham. The acronym stands for Able, Best at All Times, Aim High, Yes! We can and All for One.
Martin was married and was the father of several children.
The suspect, however, has been described by members of the public as a “lunatic”.
